Lesson 1: What Is an Operating System?

Lesson Goals:

Teach beginners what an operating system (OS) is, why it's important, and introduce a few common types.

1. What is an Operating System (OS)?

The simple way to think about it:

2. What the Operating System Does

The operating system handles a lot of important jobs — automatically!

Task Example
Manages Hardware Controls your keyboard, screen, speakers, printer, mouse, etc.
Runs Programs Lets you open apps like Word, Chrome, Photoshop, and games.
Organizes Files Helps you save, find, and open your documents, photos, and videos.
Keeps Things Safe Protects your device with passwords, permissions, and security updates.

Without an OS...

You would have to manually control every piece of hardware yourself. Imagine typing long codes *just* to open a photo- no thanks!

The First Operating System was created in the 1950s and could only do one thing at a time!

3. Common Operating Systems You Might Know

Operating Systems are Everywhere!

Operating System Where You Could See It
Windows Most home, school, and office computers.
macOS MacBook Pro/Air, iMac, or any other Apple computer.
Linux Servers and smart devices.
iOS iPhones and iPads (mobile operating system).
Android Most non-Apple smartphones and tablets.

Know Your System: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS are all different — know which one you’re using!

4. How You Interact with an Operating System

Everytime you use a device, you're working with the operating system- even if you don't realize it!

You’re interacting with the OS constantly, from the moment you turn on your device to the moment you shut it down.

Lesson Summary

Thanks to operating systems, computers and devices are much easier for everyone to use- no need to be a coding expert just to get your work done!

Over 70% of smartphones worldwide run Android, making it the most popular OS for mobile devices
